Probabilistic consensus via polling and majority rules

چکیده
In this paper, we consider lightweight decentralised algorithms for achieving consensus in distributed systems. Each member of a distributed group has a private value from a fixed set consisting of, say, two elements, and the goal is for all members to reach consensus on the majority value. We explore variants of the voter model applied to this problem. In the voter model, each node polls a randomly chosen group member and adopts its value. The process is repeated until consensus is reached. We generalize this so that each member polls a (determin-istic or random) number of other group members and changes opinion only if a suitably defined super-majority has a different opinion. We show that this modification greatly speeds up the convergence of the algorithm , as well as substantially reducing the probability of it reaching consensus on the incorrect value.

Distributed Multivalued Consensus
Motivated by the distributed binary consensus algorithm in Perron et al. [(2009) UsingThree States for Binary Consensus on Complete Graphs. INFOCOM 2009, IEEE, April, pp. 2527–2535], we propose a distributed algorithm for the multivalued consensus problem. In the multivalued consensus problem, each node initially chooses from one of k available choices and the objective of all nodes is to find ...
متن کاملDeriving Stopping Rules for the Probabilistic Hough Transform by Sequential Analysis
It is known that Hough Transform computation can be signiicantly accelerated by polling instead of voting. A small part of the data set is selected at random and used as input to the algorithm. The performance of these Proba-bilistic Hough Transforms depends on the poll size. Most Probabilistic Hough algorithms use a xed poll size, which is far from optimal since conservative design requires th...
متن کاملSome Upper Bounds on Expected Agreement Time of a Probabilistic Local Majority Polling Game
This paper investigates the expected agreement time of a probabilistic polling game on a connected graph. Given a connected graph G with an assignment of a value in {0, 1} to each vertex, we consider a polling game on G that repeats the following π-polling forever, where π = (π1, · · · , πn) is a stochastic vector, i.e., πk ≥ 0, ∑n k=1 πk = 1: For k randomly chosen vertices v with probability π...
متن کاملConsensus or Deadlock? Consequences of Simple Behavioral Rules for Coordination in Group Decisions
Coordinated collective behaviors often emerge from simple rules governing the interactions of individuals in groups. We model mechanisms of coordination among ants during cooperative transport, a challenging task that requires a consensus on travel direction. Our goal is to determine whether groups following simple behavioral rules can reach a consensus using minimal information. Using determin...
متن کاملAnalysis of a TCP system under polling-type reduction-signal procedures
The performance of a Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) for a system with N connections sharing a common Active Queue Management (AQM) is analyzed for both AdditiveIncrease Multiplicative-Decrease (AIMD) and MultiplicativeIncrease Multiplicative-Decrease (MIMD) control mechanisms, where reduction signals follow either a cyclic or a probabilistic polling-type procedure. The Laplace-Stieltjes Tr...
